The baked ham and cheese croissant is a delicious pastry that blends the rich, buttery texture of French croissants with the savory taste of ham and cheese. Originating from French cafes and bakeries, it has become a staple breakfast or brunch item worldwide. The blend of flavors offers a perfect balance, making it both a comforting and indulgent treat.
Ingredients
For the Croissant Dough:
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 ¼ cups unsalted butter (cold)
- 1 cup milk (cold)
- ¼ cup sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
For the Filling:
- 8-10 slices of deli ham
- 1 ½ cups shredded cheese (Gruyere or cheddar)
- Optional: 1-2 tbsp Dijon mustard
Instructions:
Step 1: Making the Dough
- Activate the Yeast: Combine warm milk and sugar, sprinkle yeast on top, and let it sit for about 10 minutes until it’s foamy.
- Prepare the Dough: In a large bowl, mix flour and salt. Pour in the milk-yeast mixture, and mix until combined.
- Roll Out the Dough: Place the dough on a floured surface and roll it out into a large rectangle.
- Layer the Butter: Take cold butter and slice it into thin sheets, layering it across the dough. Fold the dough over the butter and roll it out again. Repeat this process several times to create layers.
Step 2: Adding the Filling
- Roll Out the Dough Again: Roll the dough into a thin rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.
- Cut Triangles: Cut the dough into triangles, as you would for traditional croissants.
- Add Ham and Cheese: Place a slice of ham and some shredded cheese on each triangle. If you like, add a small dab of Dijon mustard for extra flavor.
- Roll and Shape: Starting from the wider end, roll each triangle up towards the tip to form a crescent shape.
Step 3: Baking the Croissants
- Egg Wash: Lightly beat the egg and brush it over the tops of the croissants for a golden finish.
- Bake: Place the croissants on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for about 20-25 minutes or until golden brown and flaky.
