Original recipe yields 1 serving.

Preparation

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the sugar, nutmeg, baking soda, salt, eggs, sour milk, and shortening.
  2. Gradually add enough flour to the mixture until the dough is firm enough to roll out on a floured surface.
  3. Roll out the dough and cut it using a doughnut cutter.
  4. Heat shortening to 375°F (190°C). Fry the doughnuts, turning them several times until golden brown.
  5. Drain on crumpled paper towels. Allow to cool slightly, then dust with powdered sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, or drizzle with glaze (see recipe below) if desired.
  6. Repeat the process with the doughnut centers.

Tip: To make sour milk, add 1 tablespoon of vinegar to 1 cup of fresh milk.

White Doughnut Glaze

  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 4 to 6 Tbsp milk

Preparation:

  1. Mix the powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and milk with a fork until you reach the desired consistency.
  2. Adjust the glaze by adding more powdered sugar to thicken or more milk to thin it down.
