Melty Provolone Turkey Burgers with Balsamic Onions

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1½ lbs ground turkey
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 4 slices provolone cheese
  • 4 burger buns
  • Lettuce, tomato, mayo, or mustard (optional)

For the balsamic caramelized onions:

  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • Pinch of salt

Directions:

  1. Caramelize the onions:
    In a large skillet, heat olive oil and butter over medium heat. Add sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook for 20–25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden and soft. Stir in brown sugar and balsamic vinegar during the last 5 minutes. Set aside.
  2. Mix the turkey patties:
    In a bowl, combine ground turkey, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Shape into 4 patties.
  3. Cook the burgers:
    Heat olive oil in a skillet or grill pan. Cook patties for 5–6 minutes per side, or until internal temperature reaches 165°F (75°C). Add a slice of provolone on each patty in the final minute and cover to melt.
  4. Assemble the burgers:
    Toast buns if desired. Add a lettuce leaf or tomato slice to the bottom bun, place the turkey patty on top, and spoon over a generous heap of caramelized onions. Close with the top bun.
  5. Serve and enjoy:
    Pair with baked fries, coleslaw, or grilled corn for a delicious, balanced meal.
