This stovetop bread recipe is perfect for when you don’t have access to an oven but still want to enjoy fresh, homemade bread.

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup warm water (110°F/45°C)
  • 1/4 cup milk (at room temperature)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (plus extra for greasing)

Directions:

  1. Activate the Yeast: Combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Make the Dough: Combine flour, salt, yeast mixture, milk, and olive oil. Stir until a soft dough forms.
  3. Knead the Dough: Knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. First Rise: Let the dough rise in a warm spot for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  5. Shape the Dough: Punch down and shape into a round loaf or individual portions.
  6. Second Rise: Let the shaped dough rise again for 30 minutes.
  7. Cook the Bread: Cook in a non-stick skillet or cast-iron pan over medium-low heat for 5-7 minutes per side.
  8. Serve: Let cool for a few minutes before slicing. Serve warm with butter, jam, or your favorite spread.
